De Cero a Cuatro Mil Ochocientos: Colombia, Fotografía, Alimento

Four separate volumes in a unique double slipcase seek to define Colombian gastronomy by displaying the differences in food and foodways as elevation within the country climbs from the seashore to the heights of the Andes.

Author and photographer Alejandro Osses Saenz, whose work explores food systems through multiple media, shows us the environments and the people who hunt, farm, and cook within them. We see piles of ears of dried corn, women climbing trees to harvest aça berries, coffee beans curing, young men working the early morning meat markets, street vendors in Bogotá, a corn festival in the city of Ramiriquí, a farmer who has reclaimed abused land, and a wealth of varieties of beans and corn.

This is a dramatic summary of a country’s diversity and its beauty. Essays and photocaptions are informative, but its the photography which is most captivating.
